In this new world of social media, branding your business has become more important and more extensive than ever. The days of slapping your logo on your storefront and your business card, buying a TV commercial and calling it a day are over. Now, your company has the opportunity to have constant contact with your audience, so having an understanding of your brand and the ability to communicate your brand story correctly and consistently will quickly turn your followers into paying customers.
Defining who you are as a company is often easier said than done but I assure you this, your brand story is being told whether you are telling it or not. Take control of the narrative by following these 3 steps to becoming a Boss at Branding:
1. Define your Identity
Think of your business as a person. Now, if you were to describe that person, what would that person be like? How would it think? What would it care about? What would it look like, talk like, do for fun? Keep the wants and needs of your target customer in mind when developing your company identity. Then, BE TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE! You don’t have to be everything to everybody, decide who you are and be consistent because the clients you attract will be loyal to a brand story that they identify with.
2. Get Dressed
This is the fun part. Now that you know who you are, it’s time to play dress up. Communicating your brand through visuals is just like communicating your personality through fashion. Your logo, color palette, fonts, photos, social media content and partnerships should all align with your brand’s personality. Are you bold, bright and colorful? Are you simple, clean and pastel? Give all of your social platforms the same “fashion sense” and then WORK IT. This is where there is a lot of opportunity to increase your brand equity. If you invest in high quality design work and imagery, the perceived value of your brand will increase and so can your price point.
Here are a few of our favorite branding tools that help us play “dress up” with our clients:
Pinterest: Create a mood board filled with inspiring images that represent your company.
Planoly: We can’t stress the importance of planning out your social media posts with a thorough content calendar. Planoly is a great tool to visually plan and analyze your Instagram content.
VSCO: It’s important to have a consistent editing style throughout all of your posts. VSCO is a simple editing app that can help streamline your editing process and create a cohesive feel to your page.
3. Build Relationships
So we know who you are, we know what you look like, now we have to make some friends. Engagement is the name of the game. Find out where your target customer “hangs out” online and start getting buddy-buddy. Like and comment with genuine and thoughtful comments in the voice of your brand. But making friends is only half the battle, you have to nurture your relationships with consistent contact. Choose the platforms that you want to focus on and then be diligent about engaging with your community. Treat them like they are part of the inner circle and they will become advocates of your brand.
