How to Write for Social
One of the biggest and most grueling struggles for social media users is finding the right way to phrase their captions, bios, and comments. As an agency that provides guidance in branding, marketing and public relations we thought we’d share some of the best practices for creating authentic copy that stays true to your mission, brand, and tone!
Be consistent: Develop your voice
When writing copy for yourself (or others), you need to be consistent! Your audience will relate, engage and respond more to consistency. The best way to demonstrate consistency, aside from posting often, is to develop your voice as a brand! Your voice feeds into how the copy reads to your audience. It needs to be authentic, so define your identity and how it translates to the written word. When people read your content, how do you want to sound? Girly and feminine? Professional and serious? Do you want to use profanity? Do you write in text slang? These are all things to consider when developing your voice! Once you have your voice, you need to remain consistent and always write with those same principles. Remember to align your voice with your objectives. Don’t speak to things that aren’t in your realm! For example, copy that works for a Makeup Artist will vary from that of an Attorney! Hone in on your brand and stick to it. This will attract engagement and ultimately help you to find an audience that not only relates to your brand, but that is also interested in what you have to say and how you say it.
Keep it personal and impactful
Recognize the value of having an audience! Your audience chooses to interact, follow and keep up with YOU and your content! These people want to hear and read content from YOU. Your mission, brand, and tone resonate with them on a personal level, so don’t be afraid to be real, raw and personal in your copy. Remember that as a brand, you are trying to build connections and increase engagement. When you speak directly to your audience as individuals you will accomplish just that! Ensure that you’re speaking with impact and purpose rather than fluff and the same song lyrics or quotes. Grab your community. Ask yourself if you’re being authentic and personal in your copy and comments. Are you giving advice from personal experience? Offering services that you truly provide? Telling personal anecdotes that relate to your audience? These are all things that require you to open up to your audience and will in turn increase your engagement and credibility.
Add a call to action
Including a call to action (or CTA) is a MUST when writing copy! A CTA is that piece of information usually found at the end of your copy, that invites your audience to do something. Follow, like, comment, share, retweet, click, read, download are all great examples of CTAs that promote engagement and interaction with your brand! Including a CTA strengthens the impact of your copy and directs your audience to show their support. They act as a great tool for insights as well, so make sure to include them! Creative Label Tip: Stay away from chunky paragraphs! Writing long-form copy, that is split up with emojis and a strong CTA performs best on Instagram!
