We all have that one girlfriend who is always complaining about the types of guys that she attracts–
and the complaints are usually warranted–rude, shallow, dumb, cheap–you name it. Let’s just say they aren’t hubby material. Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” At some point you gotta look in the mirror and say, what can I do differently to attract someone better?
The same story can be told for business. Sure, having clients is great, but if you are attracting the wrong client for your business, you’re in store for a very rocky road–and not the delicious ice cream kind. A lot of businesses make the mistake of tailoring their brand to the customer they currently have as opposed to the customer that they want. Follow these 3 steps to dump the dud and start attracting your dream client.
1. Identify your Needs
Just like in the world of dating, sometimes it takes some trial and error before you start to understand what kind of client you want to work with. At the beginning of your business journey you may attract a different type of person than you ultimately want. As you go along you’ll start to identify the things you appreciate about those clients and the things you wish were different.
Take some time to take inventory of the type of customer you currently attract and what is working and what is not. Think about the last 10 patrons of your business; what were they like? What was their age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.? Once you have a picture of who you’re currently “dating,” make a list of what you would change if you could have it any way you wanted.
2. Get to know your Dream Client
So you know what you DON’T want your client to be, which is an important step in finding “The One,” but now it’s time to really get specific and learn exactly who your dream client is so you can tailor your branding to attract them..
Create a detailed and specific profile of your dream client. What do they look like, act like, care about? Where do they hang out? What social platforms do they use? What impresses them? What bothers them? What entertains them? What bores them? Treat it like a date–take your time and learn about them. You can never know your dream client too well.
3. Tailor your Branding
In the last article, 3 Steps to Becoming a Boss at Branding, we did a similar exercise where we broke down just exactly who we were as a business. If you haven’t read that one yet, make sure you give it a skim because now it’s time to compare. Does your brand match the dream client you are targeting? If the answer is yes, bravo!! If the answer is no, you either need to change your dream client or change your branding to appeal to your dream client. Make sure the colors, fonts, voice, and spirit of your brand are in line with what your dream client would be interested in. Be true to who you are, be consistent, invest in quality design and content and before you know it, you and your dream client will being going steady!
At Creative Label, we know that step 3 can be the most challenging. It takes a lot of time and talent to develop a brand strategy that will captivate your dream client and we would love to help! Shoot us an email at email@example.com.
