Hey Labelers! Are you sick of seeing those social media hacks that just don’t work IRL? In this week’s podcast episode, we’re looking at TikTok’s #FactCheckYourFeed initiative and the importance of digital literacy.
Critical thinking has become more important than ever—because our mass media culture is a maze of information! Even though TikTok and other social media platforms aren’t considered key news sites, misinformation sources target them due to high traffic and impressionable users. With 71% of people obtaining news from social media, we must stay digitally literate to identify and discard such misinformation.
It’s one thing to trick your friends into believing a scratched car can be fixed with nothing more than some elbow grease. Still, the daily bombardment of conspiracy theories powered by social media algorithms can cause social hysterics.
Luckily for everyone, media platforms have decided it’s about time to help clean up this heap of fake news. TikTok’s #FactCheckYourFeed campaign aims to help equip the community with the skills necessary to engage content critically. TikTok has kicked off this campaign with a series about critical thinking and news literacy, hosted by some of its news savvy TikTokers, using entertaining metaphors and analogies to explain misinformation. From sharing recipes to identifying accurate vaccine facts, TikTok hopes to educate its users so that everyone has access to good, accurate information.
We hope to see more great things coming soon from #FactCheckYourFeed. TikTok has made the campaign easy to follow, with their intended videos coming up at the top of your search using #FactCheckYourFeed.
