Watch out TikTok, there’s a new competitor on the market and it’s called Reels. From the creators of Instagram, Reels allows users to record short 15 second videos set to music or other audio. Sounds pretty familiar, right? Following its launch in Brazil last year, Instagram is now expanding Reels to new markets in France and Germany. So what makes Reels different from TikTok? What is “Reels”?
Reels, like TikTok, is an easy way for people to film creative videos with a simple set of editing tools. Originally, Reels was meant to be shared only through stories but after their launch in Brazil, users wanted the ability to have their videos on their feed so they’re more permanent and have a better opportunity to go viral. Instagram is now moving Reels to a dedicated area on the users Profile and Explore page so it’ll be more of a destination on the app, like how the stories row is. With this set destination, it’ll be easier for other users to watch a certain profile’s videos as well as increases the chances for the video to gain more views.
How will it be different from TikTok?
As we’ve seen, TikTok videos are mainly rehearsed and choreographed dances, tricks, etc. The challenge for Reels will be for users to be able to produce different content from what’s being produced on TikTok as well as their feeds, stories and on IGTV. With the editing tools and workflow, Reels is meant to offer creators to film videos that are more spontaneous to create different kinds of video than its competitors.
Instagram hasn’t released when it plans on releasing Reels globally or to the U.S., but hopes the expansion will help them build on their product and enhance the user experience.
