It’s no secret that Instagram users have a seemingly love-hate relationship with the platform’s complicated algorithm. Since taking away the chronological feed and removing likes, Instagram has risked not meeting the demands of its users. Especially in a time where new emerging platforms, such as Tik Tok, are dominating audience attention. This leads many to speculate about the fate of Instagram. Could it become the next Myspace? And what does that mean for your brand?
First, let’s take a second to talk about some of the pros and cons of Instagram!
It’s familiar -You’re accustomed to using the Instagram app, and you’ve finally–or maybe you’re just now starting to–figured out how to maneuver around it.
Your Followers– More than likely, your brand has already established a loyal following or community.
Your Audience– We’ve talked about the importance of knowing your audience in some of our past blogs; your audience is not only already using the platform, but Instagram gives you the tools you need to monitor your audience and ultimately customize your feed to meet your followers’ needs. Monitoring your audience through the Insights tool on Instagram is also beneficial to growing your brand.
The algorithm – We’ve all been there, missing out on your friends’ posts because the algorithm doesn’t post pictures in chronological order anymore. Plus getting fewer likes because your image was pushed to the bottom of the feed. Although it is meant to show posts from the people we care about most, the algorithm is frustrating and can often be discouraging to those of you who are still trying to figure it out.
Brand noise – Instagram is the hot place for brands! Therefore, it can be challenging to make your brand stand out amongst all of the noise.
Influencer fatigue – With so many influencers saturating the platform, audiences have started to become bored with Influencers posting the same things and with the same filters, content that ultimately becomes repetitive or ingenuine. This makes the demand for authentic posts higher than ever.
Despite industry chatter, Instagram is still maintaining its relevance. In fact, 2019 studies revealed the amount of Instagram users increased from 35% to 37%. Regardless of these statistics, the platform’s new updates and features have provided new challenges for casual users and business owners.
Even though these new features have presented new obstacles for brands, at Creative Label we are always drumming up solutions! After doing some research, we think we have found the perfect remedy.
One word, engagement! And we are not talking about putting a ring on it. When we say engagement we are referring to social engagement. Social engagement is basically the process of communicating within an online community, or Instagram in this case. To keep your audience engaged, interact with your followers in a meaningful and substantive way. Heart eyes and “YASSS” are not going to cut it. The one thing that will help to restore Instagram to its former glory is to promote authentic, meaningful content, connection, and engagement. Try saying that five times fast!
Likes will come and go, but meaningful engagement lasts forever! (Straight out of a Creative Label Holiday Card!) Significant engagement will be the key to successfully growing your brand on this platform. At the end of the day, whether or not Instagram is seeing the end of its reign, it’s important to remember to implement authenticity into your brand.
