It’s no secret that we all enjoy a little love on social media. Have you ever messaged your bestie like, ”When do you think I should post my pic?” because WE HAVE! And it’s okay. Nothing to be ashamed of here, your favorite brands do it too.
Our social media apps are driven by one primary element: engagement.
In order for our accounts to reach their full potential, it is essential to have users interacting with our content. One of the best ways to achieve this is by posting at ‘prime time,’ catching as many active thumbs at the same time as possible.
So, is there a best time to post on social media? You ask.
The answer is YES! But engagement matters even more.
Of course, every app is different and everyone’s audience is different but let’s give you a general breakdown of how this works.
Posting Time v. Engagement
What’s the Difference?
Instagram has made our lives a little easier with this whole timing thing. When you set up a business account you are provided with insights that tell you about your audience. USE THIS! Insights are your friend when trying to grow your brand. This section allows you to discover what times are best for you according to each day.

Engagement, on the other hand, is all about the algorithm. The algorithm determines what you will see on your feed. Instagram displays your content to a small percentage of your followers to see how well they engage with your post. When the majority of that small percentage is engaging, your content will be shown to the next 10%. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. This is why weddings, engagements, babies, and announcements all do so well on socials. As a result of high engagement, Instagram shows that image to more of the user’s followers.
Why is it Important?
Engagement is the heartbeat of Instagram. It determines how alive our accounts really are. Understanding your personal analytics will help more users see your content at the same time, but understanding engagement will help elevate your account.
Here are some things to remember when it comes to engagement:
- Engage with others: TAKE NOTE – In order to improve engagement you have to engage. Make sure you are leaving meaningful comments, liking, following, and watching content. Instagram wants to see that you are an active user so MAKE THAT HAPPEN!
- Call to Action: Polls, votes, quizzes, and chats, are all great ways to combat the algorithm. These tools prompt users to easily engage with your account. Ensure you are putting up stories constantly, and use these tactics while doing so.
Don’t be afraid to reach outside of your circle. Use hashtags to explore beyond your followers and engage with their content as well. You never know what leaving a comment may lead to, even if it’s just improved engagement. 😉
