The power of vertical storytelling
Hey Labelers! Today, we’ll be discussing the one universal format across all social media platforms: stories.
If you’re an avid social media user, you probably have multiple social media accounts, ranging from Instagram to LinkedIn! And practically, the top eight social media platforms used today have some form of stories embedded within their system. The kinds of stories range from LinkedIn stories, where you can share professional moments from work, or the infamous Snapchat stories, where you can share daily parts of your life with your close friends.
So, why have stories become the universally adopted design across every single platform? 🤔
Simplicity vs. Storytelling
An essential aspect of creating an engaging story is the inverse relationship between simplicity and storytelling.
When we think of traditional storytelling, books, film, and perhaps Youtube videos are the first things that come to mind. To become successful in these realms, you must put in a lot of effort to create a well-told story. It takes time to develop a good story for your intended audience.
On the other hand, simplicity describes the ease of storytelling from the creator’s perspective. How much effort do I need to put in to make a successful story? Examples of simple storytelling could be apps like text posts or photos, where you may only need to take a simple snapshot to create a successful narrative.
The clashing dynamic of both simplicity and storytelling perfectly intersect at our user-friendly format: stories. 🙌
Why are stories so engaging?
Many social media platforms have begun to adopt this format—Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Linked̛In—that focus on enhancing the story feature. Out of all, TikTok has risen dramatically in popularity due to its ability to connect Vine and Musically cohesively. An interesting feature of TikTok is this idea called “random reinforcement,” which creates the same addicting nature you would get when you use a slot machine.
All social media platforms use this—as you swipe, social media platforms automatically generate new posts. However, TikTok’s popularity is due to “random reinforcement” and the combination of the story format. Each time you scroll, there’s new content prepared to keep you hooked. 🤯
How can I implement stories more?
Stories are vital to reaching a wider audience. Instagram and TikTok are the perfect ways to start engaging with your audience using stories. There are many ways to implement stories in your business. First, people love seeing what the process is behind your work. Create a story about a day in your life at work to create a buzz about your product. Next, (this is an easy one!) use location markers in your Instagram stories; to help your story reach a wider audience.
Another way could be to give your insights, tips, or tricks to your audience so that they’re also benefiting from following your business. For example, if your company was a coffee company, you could create a weekly segment of creating different coffee drinks and how to make them at home. You could also upload these segments on TikTok and use popular tracks that are trending. Learning directly from a trusted source is a great way to enhance your engagement with stories. 💯
