It’s no accident that privacy policies have historically been long and ambiguous. Many companies don’t want you to read them! They want you to give them free reign over your information to use and sell at their leisure! Thankfully, under the new GDPR regulations, that behavior won’t fly quite as easily. Here’s a quote from the GDPR FAQ that sums up the reform nicely:
“The conditions for consent have been strengthened, and companies will no longer be able to use long illegible terms and conditions full of legalese, as the request for consent must be given in an intelligible and easily accessible form, with the purpose for data processing attached to that consent.”
So basically, these new regulations will give everyone affected by these updated policies the right to clearly opt in or out of having their data collected and used by an online company. If you’re a web-based company with international clientele you should hop on this train and update your policy in order to comply with these new regulations.
